92 Empowerment planted weed. From a teenage hedonist, college utilitarian, and refugee stoic, I grew into a middle age pragmatist de- veloping so many branches of materialism. Now my roots hold fast to spiritualism. Mindfulness evolves through fer- tile questions. 'So papa, what profound answer have you dug up?' prod- ded Pablo. 'Do not follow a good life. Lead a good life!' smiled Papa. 'And to be empowered on the road of life, my answer is the bicycle!' 'Bicycle ...' laughed Pablo. Anita joined too in the laughter. 'Remember when we cycled to meet Papa's friend Dobby? Papa promised Dobby would give us the race of our lives! He did! We never cy- cled so fast! Dobby, the snarling Doberman, chased us and almost bit off our tires!' 'That was when I first thought about life and survival! Yet why a bicycle?' cajoled Pablo. 'My thoughts sing with bicycle rhythms!' spoke Papa. 'Doesn't a pensive walk get us equally where we want to go?' suggested Pablo. 'Walking may be your answer, but wheels of meditations carry me best to all destinations!' sang out Papa. 'So you're more than a cyclist?' queried Pablo. 'I cycle, therefore I am!' chuckled Papa. 'Raise up your grape juice and toast: To bicycles, healthy, economic, effec- tive green meditative machines, moving thought and per- sons successfully forward ...' 'Bicycles are fun, if you have time. I'm rushed! My car gets me quickly to where I want to go. It's also safer, more comfortable and yes, stylish.' said Anita, lighting a cigarette. Papa coughed. 'Really?' 'Dear nicotine addict, no smoking please! An apple is healthier for all of us,' insisted Pablo. 'Bossy Pablo! I'm not pregnant!' winked Anita. 'You know what I mean. Us! We breathe the same air!' Pablo tossed her an apple.

Anita stashed the apple and cigarettes in her purse. 'You smoke. Your car smokes. You want to poison your- self and your family!' Papa harshly frowned, then smiled again. 'I do worry about you!' 'I know what I'm doing!' answered Anita stubbing her cigarette. 'Lovely daughter, sucking cigarettes may help manage stressful lives, but you know the unhealthy consequences! And that car presents another deadly habit!' Papa coun- seled. 'Even in my racy sedan, I'm going to be late!' joked Anita. 'Thank you for giving your lovingly sage advice! Hasta luego familia!' Papa hugged Anita. 'Adios daughter! Drive carefully ...' Her new cherry sedan soon sped away. Uncle's grad- uation gift of 'wheels' had recognized her transition into a dynamic young lady. Uncle picked a car that reflected Anita's own qualities of reliability and elegance. Moreover, this sedan well represented her comfortable life and exten- sive freedoms. Her critical family was very loving and generous. Papa and Uncle readily helped others and sacrificed everything for friends. When their comrades disappeared in the old country, they investigated government involvement. Being outspoken about their discoveries, they were branded rev- olutionaries and escaped to Canada. Here, Uncle ventured well, profited greatly, and spoiled Anita with gifts. Papa was also paid well for his creativity. Yet he anguished about his daughter's striving for 'la dulce vida', the sweet life. Heavy traffic made driving frustrating. 'Freeway?' she sighed. 'What is free about this way?' She slaved hard to support her crawling auto. What if it broke down? Could she afford its expensive repairs? If stolen, her life would be stolen. Stuck in traffic, life seemed jeopardized! How does one survive such stress? She switched on the news. Item one detailed terrorism's effect on gas prices. It was bad enough to worry about being attacked. Now she
