Boiling Point Joanna Emery With an illustration by Kevin Cook Why did we stop? I don't know. How come the car isn't moving? I told your brother, I don't know. Hey, what happened? Are we there yet? No, we are not. What happened? I said, I do not know. Sssh kids, your father has to concen- trate on his driving. But Mom, how can he be driving if the car isn't moving? Look! I'm in the driver's seat so I'm driving. I think you're just wasting gas, Dad. Yeah, maybe we should have taken the other route. Now kids, don't gang up on your father. All the roads are busier in the summer. 134

Joanna Emery 135 I don't want to spend all day in this red-hot car! I'll be fried to a crisp! Me too. Me three. Fine by me! Next time we'll stay home! George, watch your blood pressure. You don't have to be so harsh. They're just children So what if I have a heart attack. They're driving me crazy anyway! That's funny, Dad. Har-dee-ha-ha. Enough! But Dad, it's really hot in here ... It's not my fault we don't have air conditioning! We do at home, Dad. Yeah, being stuck in traffic with no air and a zillion degrees outside sucks bigtime! I wanna go home! We can't go home, sweetheart. Why can't we just turn around? That's illegal. I think it's illegal to leave your kids in a boiling hot car. We have NOT left our kids in a boiling hot car! Your mother and I are here too! Okay, so you feel as hot as us? Of course! And since I'm bigger-I feel hotter! So if we're going to die of heat exhaustion, you're the first to go. No, dummy, the youngest ones go first. And you'll be sec- ond!
